Does anyone know if metapost accepts LaTeX 2e (AMS math commands in
particular) in "btex...etex" blocks?

Thanks,
David Romano

The idea is to create a preamble just for tex commands. Here's my metapost
template. Note the second line tells metapost to compile using latex and
not plain tex. Any packages you want metapost to be aware of must be put
here as well. Keep It Simple. I use the Lucida Bright fonts so that's what
I have here. The prologues switch is set to zero since that's what seems
to work once I use mps2eps and epstopdf to generate file-N.eps and file-N.pdf
respectively from file.N. (MiKTeX/WinEdt/WinXP).

verbatimtex
%&latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[T1,expert]{lucidabr}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\begin{document}
etex;

prologues:=0;

input my-mp-macros.mp;

beginfig(1);
numeric u; u:=1.0cm;

endfig;
end;

Hello, I'm new in this technology, could you tell me where to start?
I'm interested (as a type designer) about parametric fonts, and I've
found some web sites about some kind of software that it's able to
convert metafont fonts to postcript, with some restrictions.
Does anybody ever made parametric fonts directly in postscript?
I think Jacques Andre has been working on it, but I'm not able to find
anything related to this.
I would apreciate any information about it.

Thank you.

Daniel Rodríguez

If you read French, then another book for getting started in METAFONT is
the following:

I'm drawing pictures showing set intersections, maps and things like that,
using Metapost.
Can anyone suggest some Metapost exmples, and where I can find them?

Thanks in advance,

The package venn.mp might be of some help for this. It should be on CTAN.

Hi, everyone.

I tried to write down a macro to draw angles, with metapost:

def draw_angle_(expr A,O,B,d) =
path r,q,s;
r := fullcircle scaled d shifted O;
q :=O..A;
s :=O..B;
A=(e,f); B=(g,h); O=(i,l);
if h=l:
  draw (r cutafter q);
  elseif f=l:
draw (r cutbefore s);
else:
draw (r cutafter q);
draw (r cutbefore s);
fi;
enddef;

It seemes to work with this angle:

beginfig(1);
a=.7in; b=.5in; c=.3in; d=.2in;
z0=(0,0); z1=(b,c); z2=(a,-c);
drawarrow z0..z1;
drawarrow z0..z2;
draw_angle_(z1,z0,z2,3mm);
endfig;

But with this:

beginfig(2);
z0=(0,-b); z1=(b,c); z2=(a,-c);
drawarrow z0..z1;
drawarrow z0..z2;
draw_angle_(z1,z0,z2,3mm);
endfig;

I get the following error message:

! Inconsistent equation (off by 36).
<to be read again>
                   ;
draw_angle_->...(e,f);(EXPR2)=(g,h);(EXPR1)=(i,l);

if.h=l:draw(r.cutafter.q);...
l.36   draw_angle_(z1,z0,z2,3mm)
                                ;

Could anyone explain the situation?

Thanks, indeed.
Rodolfo

Hi
The problem I think is that the circle itself has a start and an end. If
you cut at the wrong place the first time then only part of what you
expect will remain.
I had the same experimence when I did this and had to rotate the circle
before cutting.
The function I ended up with was:

% Draws an arc between the lines a--b and b--c at the distance radius from
% the point b
def arc_angle(expr a, b, c, radius) =
        begingroup
        save p;
        path p;
        p :=  (fullcircle  rotated ( angle (a-b)) cutafter
                ((0,0) -- unitvector(c-b) scaled 2)) scaled 2;
        ( p scaled radius shifted b)
        endgroup
enddef;

Hi, everyone,
I'm a new Latex and MetaPost user, my configuration is MikTEX/WinEdt. I just
finished a figure with MetaPost, and I'm having same dificulties to have it
printed in my LaTex document.

I've been trying to use a DOS version of Jon Edvarson script MPS2EPS:

*********** MPS2EPS.BAT *********************

REM set
tex=latexMPOST -tex=latex %1.mp@echo
\documentclass{minimal}      >  temptex.tex@echo
\usepackage[dvips]{graphicx} >> temptex.tex@echo
\begin{document}             >> temptex.tex@echo
\includegraphics{%1.1}       >> temptex.tex@echo
\end{document}               >> temptex.tex
LATEX temptex.tex
DVIPS -Ppdf -j0 -G0 -E temptex.dvi
copy temptex.ps %1.eps /Y
del temptex.*
del %1.1
del %1.mpx
REM del %1.log

************** end MPS2EPS.BAT ***********************

My macro reads in the following way:

************** begin base.mp  ************************

%-- Heading -----------------
prologues := 0;
verbatimtex
%&latex
\documentclass[10pt]{article}
%\usepackage{whatever}
\begin{document}
etex
input base;
%-----------------------------

beginfig(1);

  pair A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I;
  A:=(0,4cm); B:=(8cm,4cm); C:=(.5cm,2cm); D:=(8cm,3.8cm); E:=(.5cm,1.5cm);
F:=(8cm,6.5cm); G:=(0,0);
  H:=(0,8cm); I:=(8cm,0);

  % draw braces
  label.rt((btex $\lbrace$ etex) xscaled 3 yscaled 11,
1/2[(-.7cm,0),(-.7cm,4cm)]);

  drawarrow (G--I) withpen pencircle scaled 2bp;
  drawarrow (G--H)withpen pencircle scaled 2bp;
  drawarrow ((3cm,7cm)--(5cm,5cm));
  drawarrow ((6cm,1cm)--(6cm,3cm));
  drawarrow ((7cm,5cm)--(6cm,4.2cm));

  draw (A--B) withpen pencircle scaled 2bp;
  draw (C--D)dashed evenly withpen pencircle scaled 2bp;
  draw (E--F)withpen pencircle scaled 2bp;

  % draw title
  label.top (btex (a) whole population etex, (3cm,7cm));
  label.bot (btex (b) truncated population etex, (6cm,1cm));
  label.rt  (btex Truncation etex, (7cm,5cm));

  % draw axis explanation
  labeloffset := 0.5cm;
  label.lrt(btex Educational Attainment etex, (6cm,0));
  label.top(btex ln earnings \$ etex, (0,8cm));
  label.rt(btex Low Earners etex rotated 90, 1/2[(-1.5cm,0),(-1.5cm,4cm)]);
    label.rt(btex Source: Cain (1976) etex,(-1cm,-1.5cm));

    vardef randompoint(expr l,r,b,u) =
    if (r<=l) or (u<=b):
    errmessage("not a proper region");
    origin
    else:
    numeric x, y;
    x = l+uniformdeviate(r-l);
    y = b+uniformdeviate(u-b);
    (x,y)
    fi
    enddef;

    for i=0 upto 40:
    dotlabel("",randompoint(1cm,1.7cm,0cm,4.5cm));
    endfor;

    for i=0 upto 40:
    dotlabel("",randompoint(3cm,3.7cm,1cm,6.5cm));
    endfor;

    for i=0 upto 40:
    dotlabel("",randompoint(5cm,5.7cm,2cm,7.5cm));
    endfor;

    for i=0 upto 40:
    dotlabel("",randompoint(7cm,7.7cm,3cm,8.5cm));
    endfor;

endfig;

end

***************** end base.mp *************************

I've tried to run the bat file on the DOS prompt

mps2eps base

However the eps version of my figure was not generated.

I've tried to encapsulate my MetaPost code in my LaTex document using emp,
but it didn't work.

I would sincerely appreciate any adivice.

Many thanks,

Joao Pedro

Hi, everybody.

Is it possible (and how?) to get multi coloured text inside the Metapost
labels,
in normal text and also in the btex...etex command?

Thanks in advance,
		Rodolfo
