I was.
And I was developing an extended logo font.
And a symbolic font for navigation in PDF files.
And converting various MF fonts into PFB.
Not to mention a plethora of tex-related other things
 .. and then I became overwhelmed ...

After nearly two years of absence, I'm becoming interested in TeX and MP,
and I will try to get some of those abandoned projects back on track.

i wasn't surprised: i hover on the edge of being overwhelmed with a
far smaller workload.

Somewhat. My math-font started as work for Kluwer Academic, the goal was to
typeset MathML v1.0 XML files. That part was functional, but many details of
the chosen solution were very idiosyncratic (created for a very specific
workflow environment), so the fonts could not be used "in the real world".

I retained copyright on the actual font glyphs, and later I continued
development on the fonts by attempting to incorporate all of the stix chars
and working hard to come up with a sensible encoding for general TeX use.
That was a major problem because there were about 1400 distinct symbols/
glyphs involved, and I never reached a satisfactory solution.

Current status:
I'm not quite sure what I will do with these fonts now. If (when) I want to
do something with the fonts, I will need to convert the metafont sources to
metatype1 or something similar, because I'm not using metafog anymore for
the mf->pfb conversions.

I am considering writing an MP extension to create pfa/afm directly from
source (if Metatype1 can do it in awk, then surely it can be done in C,
right?).

I had seen that, but it is not the same.
My version ATM has all of the TEX-TEXT (7t) glyphs. The only real work
that still needs doing is fine tuning of the metrics and one or two
glyphs. ... and conversion to metatype1 input.

Given that you don't have a source file for font sizes greater than 10pt,=
=20
that's hardly surprising. You have to realise that METAFONT creates bitmap=
=20
fonts, i.e. fonts that *don't* scale. If you want a certain size, you need=
=20
to create it separately. It may look awful, but that's the only way to get=
=20
the best typographic quality (you don't scale down or up by just changing=
=20
the main dimensions. You often have to fine-tune).

Now, there is a way to get sizes automatically generated when you run your=
=20
previewer on the DVI file, but that needs a bit more work, a few more=20
files, and I don't understand the process well yet, so I can't give you=20
much information here :( . Look at all documents about LaTeX's NFSS, you=20
should find out how to automatise font creation there.

>2. the character looks too bold in comparison with the cm font when I=20
>produce a pdf or ps file

Does it look too bold in your DVI viewer? If so, it's simply that the=20
character *is* too bold. It's an artistic rather than technical issue. If=
=20
not, maybe you need to update your PDF and PS viewers and see if the=20
problem persists. There are well-known rendering problems for bitmap fonts=
=20
(the latest version of the Acrobat Reader has solved many of those though).=
=20
What do you use to read your PDFs?

>So, the question is what can I do to fix this?

I really should get back to work on the METAFONTtutorial=20
(http://metafont.tutorial.free.fr). My work schedule hasn't allowed me to=
=20
update it in ages :( . I expect to answer all those questions in it, so=20
that all beginners will have a single source where to find a solution to=20
their problems, but it takes too much time to work on, and I don't have it=
=20
at the moment :( .

Anyway, good luck!. I hope you'll find help from other people, I just=20
cannot give any more at the moment :( .

There's reason to worry about that archive.
But the list is OK; I'm sending Taco about

Hi everybody,

I am happy to announce the birth of a new project called MetaTeX.

The goal of the MetaTeX project is to create a GPL-ed TeX/MetaPost distribution
for POSIX compliant systems, in which the amount of distributed files is minimized
while the speed of the TeX 'make' process maximized.

This will be done by joining all of the needed functionality into a single
executable, and putting all of the texmf input files into a single archive file,
eventually resulting in a distribution that (in binary state) will comprise only three
actual files:

	an executable, a data archive, and an options file.

As a side-effect, standalone packages of C library-versions of pdfetex, mpost
and tex{exec,make} will be created.

I am posting this pre- announcement in the hope that people who are interested
in this distribution (and, possibly, even want to help) will join our mailing-list.
See the website for more information on the project, and how to subscribe.

	http://www.metatex.org

Please do not reply to this message in the group you found it in, since any reply
you give will likely be considered off-topic, but feel free to forward this message
to people you believe may be interested.

Greetings and happy TeX-ing,

Taco Hoekwater

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

GNU 3DLDF: Request for alpha testers.

GNU 3DLDF is a package for three-dimensional drawing with MetaPost output.

Since the release of 3DLDF 1.1.5.1 in January 2004 I've been working on
scanning and parsing routines so that the program can be used
interactively. I've been using GNU Bison to implement a Metafont-like
language.

There's still quite a lot to do, but it's now possible to use 3DLDF
interactively to make simple drawings. My current plan is to release the next
stable version once it's possible to access all of 3DLDF's current functionality
interactively. Once I've tied up a few loose ends and added at least some
rudimentary documentation I will start releasing alpha versions.

However, I've now set up a CVS archive on
savannah@gnu.org, where I'm keeping my development sources.
So anyone who'd like to take a look at the current state of 3DLDF and
try it out is welcome to download it from Savannah:

http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/3dldf/3dldf/Group/

There's still plenty to do, so it would be nice if someone felt inspired to
help.

The parser is new in GNU 3DLDF, so it's not documented at all in the current
_User and Reference Manual_. However, the 3DLDF language should seem familiar
to Metafont and MetaPost users, especially if they know Bison.
In particular, the file `parser.output' generated by Bison contains, among other
things, the grammar in a format similar to the Backus-Naur format used by Knuth
in _The TeXbook_ and _The METAFONTbook_.

I will be putting documentation in the CVS archive as I write it. In
particular, I plan to add an input file with examples of all valid constructions
very soon.

Unfortunately, mailing list creation on Savannah is currently disabled.
However, I will be managing a mailing list "by hand" until such time as
it's enabled again. Anyone who would like to be kept abreast of developments
should send me an email directly and I will subscribe him or her to the list.
Please put "subscribe help-3DLDF" in the subject line.

Thanks.

Laurence Finston

Si j'en ai parler c'est qu'=E0 ma grande surprise j'ai pu voir cela sur un =
site http://tex.loria.fr/prod-graph/zoonekynd/metapost/metapost.html
et donc le code source ,=E9crit en metapost, contient du code en postscript=
 en utilisant l'instruction special  ( " " );
beginfig(229)
  draw fullcircle shifted (.5,.5) xscaled 18.2cm yscaled 4cm;
  special(
    "/Times-Roman findfont 150 scalefont setfont " &
    "0 0 moveto (ABCabc) false charpath clip stroke " &
    "gsave 300 0 translate " &
    "  2 4 600 {dup 0 moveto 0 exch 0 exch 0 360 arc stroke} for " &
    "grestore "
    );
=20=20
endfig;
=20
Le probl=E8me c'est qu'en voulant compiler directement avec mptopdf cela ne=
=20
fonctionne pas et je dois passer par la compilation=20
mp ---------> dvips --------->acrobat distiller pour obtenir une page PDF p=
leine =E0 la=20
diff=E9rence de la compilation mptopdf qui a l'avantage de ne faire apparai=
tre=20
que la zone rectangulaire o=F9 a =E9t=E9 con=E7u le dessin , cela m'=E9vite=
 de recadrer
=20
Donc j'aimerais savoir comment compiler en une seule fois les fichiers de t=
ype *.mp=20
contenant du code postcript pour que le r=E9sultat puisse =EAtre comme celu=
i=20
de mptopdf.
=20
Le probl=E8me se pose aussi avec Latexpdf qui ne sais pas g=E9r=E9r le modu=
le=20
Pstricks et l=E0 aussi je dois passer par latex -----> dvips-----------> ad=
obe distiller .
=20
J'esp=E8re que les Texpert et les Metapost-doc pourront m'expliquer de fa=
=E7on=20
magistral la solution =E0 ces probl=E8mes.
